Slaughter 2 Success Equine Rescue

Slaughter 2 Success (S2S) is a small rescue located in Solon, Iowa that focuses on rescuing horses from the loose pens that have a viable future as a performance horse. We are 100% volunteer based and donor funded, meaning we have a small but mighty team dedicated to our horses. While many rescues rehome with a “no-sale” contract, we will be different as it is often unrealistic for horses to never be sold again. So, we will be teaming up with regional trainers in order to retrain and rehome horses. This is an exciting way to link up good horses with good trainers, and find excellent homes for so many horses that were previously destined for slaughter!

Our team works together to save horses that are in the loose pens at horse auctions, the horses who are dumped at the sale with no information on them, their past, or their former owner. These loose pens across the US are a common sight to these horses, it's their home where they are held on their way to the slaughter facilities across the border to Mexico or Canada where horse slaughter is legal. This home is overcrowded, terrifying, and oftentimes has no food or water. We bid directly against the kill buyers for each horse we rescue from this life.

Upon rescue, each horse undergoes a comprehensive assessment by our expert team of equine professionals, including our own founder of S2S Andria Pooley who has years of experience as a professional rider and trainer. This evaluation is used to create a custom rehabilitation and retraining plan for each individual horse.

While our goal is to save as many horses as we responsibly can, we specialize in identifying horses who have a future riding career. We are unique in that our head trainer, Andria Pooley, has competed at FEI levels in both dressage and eventing, holding a silver medal in dressage. This training goes into each horse that we rescue, but we have also successfully rehomed horses in other disciplines, as well as trail and companion horses.

In addition to sport-focused rescues, we also have a soft spot for the neglect and euthanasia cases when we are able to help. With our experienced team of trainers, we have the tools to help horses who may have emotional trauma overcome their past and go on to have a happy, successful life. Our commitment to equine welfare expands beyond specific categories, encompassing a broad spectrum of rescue scenarios.
